Knight Foundation, FIU to accelerate growth of Miami’s tech ecosystem
Building on Miami’s momentum around technology and entrepreneurship, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation has made a $10 million gift to FIU’s School of Computing and Information Sciences to develop technical talent at scale to meet the demands of industry and Miamians seeking to advance their tech skills.
The investment will catalyze the development of the local tech ecosystem by attracting top faculty researchers in areas such as artificial intelligence, smart robotics, bioinformatics, biodevices, and digital forensics, increasing the number of FIU graduates entering these sectors, and strengthen collaboration with industry. In recognition of this gift, FIU will name the Knight Foundation School of Computing and Information Sciences in the College of Engineering & Computing. Read more.

On February 24, the university hosted a socially distanced ceremony at the site of the future engineering and computing building to announce the gift and unveil the new KFSCIS at the CEC.

The investment will help the school hire new faculty in diverse and trending areas of expertise; graduate workforce-ready students in modern and innovative tech specialties; and ramp up the college’s already growing and cutting-edge research output and industry collaborations.

The Knight Foundation School of Computing and Information Sciences’ undergraduate student demographics reflect the population of Miami-Dade County, making it a local doorway to opportunity and a ready pipeline for a sector important to the local economy. FIU is No. 1 in the nation for the number of undergraduate engineering and computing degrees awarded to Hispanic students, No. 6 in degrees awarded to African American students and No. 48 in degrees awarded to women. The College is also ranked No. 8 in undergraduate computer engineering degrees awarded and No. 9 in undergraduate computer science degrees granted.
