FIU’s research enterprise has been rising at a remarkable rate, elevating the university to the Carnegie Foundation’s highest level ― Research 1: Highest Research Activity ― which only 3% of our nation’s universities can claim. Annual total research expenditures for last year was $226 million.

We are now ranked among the top 25 public universities in the world for the number of U.S. utility patents produced for patent production (National Academy of Inventors and Intellectual Property Owners Association). We did that in less than three years, from five patents awarded in 2015 to 65 in 2018.

Our preeminent programs, which represent the largest multidisciplinary research undertakings at FIU, are devising practical solutions to some of the world’s most complex problems. Some of our most successful applied research programs are bringing about impactful, real-world change in areas including disaster mitigation, forensics, child mental health, and the preservation of natural resources. A multitude of other laboratories and initiatives at FIU are catalyzing learning and innovation.

• Global FinPrint is the world’s first and largest survey of reef sharks and rays in the world, led by FIU scientists in collaboration with three Australian universities. With core funding from Paul G. Allen Philanthropies, researchers monitor species’ abundance and distribution to help guide conservation.
